Emergency Dentistry Q & A

When is emergency dentistry necessary?

If you have a condition with your oral health that causes pain, you need immediate attention. Reasons for emergency dentistry include:

  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Severe toothache
  • Swelling in your jaw or gums
  • Abscess in your mouth
  • Object stuck in your tooth or gums
  • Chipped, broken, or fractured tooth
  • Filling that falls out
  • Crown that comes off
  • Trauma to the cheeks, lips, or gums

Getting treatment immediately can make the difference between losing and saving your tooth. For example, if your tooth gets knocked out, seeing your dentist within 30 minutes can most likely save your tooth. That’s why you should never delay if you believe you have a dental emergency.

What should I do if I need emergency dentistry?

To get immediate attention, call the compassionate office staff at 1st American Dental. Tell them about your condition or the event that has occurred.

They will get in touch with a dental professional immediately and give you further instructions on what to do and where to go.

What steps can I take before arriving at my emergency dentistry appointment?

If you have a damaged tooth or trauma to your tooth, here’s what you can do to take immediate action:

Knocked-out tooth

When you pick up the tooth, do so by the crown instead of the roots. Clean the tooth with cool water and try to gently place it back in its socket and hold it there.

If you can’t do that, then put the tooth in your mouth between your cheek and tongue to keep it moist. Other options include putting it in a cup of milk until you arrive at the office.

Object stuck in your tooth or gums

It’s best to leave the object in your mouth and wait for your provider to remove it. You don’t want to cause more extensive damage to the surrounding tissues. When you call 1st American Dental, they can give you specific instructions on what to do before you arrive.

Chipped or cracked tooth

In some cases, you might not need to see your provider immediately. However, if a tooth is severely cracked, a piece of your tooth breaks off, or a tooth’s pulp is exposed, you need care right away.

To prevent further complications, avoid chewing hard or crunchy foods or eating or drinking beverages that are too hot or cold until you can be treated.

If you have a dental emergency, call 1st American Dental right away to get further instructions. If your issue can wait, you can book your appointment online.
